Abstract

This collection includes biographical information about individuals in the Ayers, Brown, McCarty, Martin, Diller, Boettner, Crump, Raynor, Ball, Freytag, and Bergeson, and families, among others. The bulk of the collection involves the life and careers of this kinship network, and their commerce, ministries, and artistic work product, and events ranging from the mid 19th century to the mid 20th century. Some documentary history of the Jitney Jungle grocery chain is included.

Deutsches Notgeld currency album

Abstract

This album of emergency paper currency measures 14-5/8”x11-5/8”x1-7/8” album with the printed title “Notgeld 1914-1924.” It contains approximately 640 separate pieces of the paper currency (Notgeld) issued by regional institutions in Germany and Austria-Hungary, primarily around the end of the World War I. Not issued by a central bank, Notgeld was not legal tender but rather an accepted means of payment in a particular locale.

Ellington Field research collection

This collection contains ten boxes of material related to the history and operation of Ellington Field, also known as Ellington Air Force Base, near Houston, Texas. The majority of the records date from 1917-2007, and include historical research materials, photographs, books, microfilm, postcards, and memorabilia. The foundation of the collection was material assembled by historian Kathryn Black Morrow for the publication of a history of Ellington Field.

Hugh R. McKean Rice Institute memoir

Abstract

This collection contains the autobiographical memoir of Hugh R. McKean, Rice Alumnus, class of 1922. The memoirs cover the early 20th century (through 1922) and for the most part describe the life of a farmer’s family in South Texas. A fair amount of the memoirs concern his years as a student, letterman, and Hohenthal Award winner at the Rice Institute. In addition, the memoirs provide McKean’s observations about events in Houston during the WWI era.
