Scope and Contents

This collection consists of materials relating to the uniform and personal equipment of a soldier of the U.S. Army in World War I. In addition there are maps of the areas of operations and an artillery barrage chart for the Reymonville area, 1 November 1918.

Red piping on the garrison cap indicates Artillery. Shoulder patch is First Army. Collar devices indicate Regular Army, 18th Infantry Regiment, Company D. Chevrons on sleeve indicate 1 year Overseas Service (1 chevron for each six months). Shoulder cord is French Fourragere, given to a person or unit as a commendation, number of commendations are shown by various combinations of cords on the fourragere, in this case probably two unit commendations.

Ribbons: blue/white/red (unidentified). Next, probably Certificate of Merit, US Army, Final: Purple Heart. Grade is likely that of Private, since there are no rank indications on sleeves.

Biographical / Historical

Floyd Swansey Edmiston was born in Choudrant, LA, on April 10, 1894. He enlisted in the United States Army June 5, 1917, listing his occupation as “farmer.” At the war’s end he married, became a soil conservationist, an agricultural agent in Mansfield, LA, completed college and, at the start of the Second World War, was employed by Louisiana State University in the Agricultural Extension Department. He died April 10, 1948.
