"On the Flogging of Women" commentary
Document is an anonymous commentary on an article appearing in the February 28, 1827 edition of “The Anti-Slavery Monthly Reporter” that discussed propositions put forward by Lord Bathurst for reforms in the treatment of enslaved people in the Colonies; in particular, a prohibition of the flogging of women, which failed to pass.
Paine Family Papers
One box containing Adath Yeshurun consecration service program and photograph, photographs of Jim Novy with David Ben-Gurion, a Rice University Semi-centennial Plaque, family history books, and Houston Chronicle news clipping, all from the Paine family from 1941 to 1992.
Partial Logbook of the Ship Leonidas
The log covers the period February 10, 1827, through November 19, 1828, and contains daily reports at sea and in port. The initial pages, and those for the months of May and June 1827, are missing. Entries indicate that the ship departed from its usual Charleston to Boston route in August 1828 and sailed for New York, then to Vera Cruz, Mexico, arriving there three months later.
