J.D. Sandefer, Jr. tribute
This collection contains a bound volume of many letters of condolence to J.D. Sandefer Jr.’s children. The letters are sent by various bankers, attorneys, businessmen, and the Presidents of Baylor University, Hardin-Simmons University, and Howard Payne University. All of the letters extol Sandefer’s abilities as a businessman, friend, and civic leader.
Libby Prison Inmate Letter
Letter written during the Civil War by an anonymous Union Army prisoner- of-war, dated December18, 1864, and addressed from Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia, to United States Senator William Wright of New Jersey, describing his worsening health while held in close confinement in the prison as hostage for a Confederate officer imprisoned in West Virginia, and urging the senator to intercede on his behalf to secure his exchange and release.
Shearith Israel Congregation collection
The collection contains six boxes of correspondence, event materials (including programs, correspondence, and memorabilia), newsletters, bulletins, news clippings, books, photographs, financial documents, sermons, and video and audio material of events that document the history of Shearith Israel Congregation in Wharton, Texas, from 1921 to 2002.
Temple Freda [Bryan, TX] collection
The Temple Freda collection is made up of documents, photographs, and news clippings concerning one of the oldest religious buildings in Bryan, Texas. Though used for different things over the years, Temple Freda remains stalwart in its support for the Jewish community in Bryan, interacting with both congregation Beth Shalom, and the A&M Hillel in College Station.
U.S. Army and Navy letters
While the letters are on a number of different topics, many deal with the Sterling Debenture Corporation and stock offerings in the American Telegraphone Corporation. The corporation was founded in 1903 to manufacture the Telegraphone, a magnetic sound recording device invented by Danish engineer Valdemar Poulson. Although several hundred machines were bought by curious scientists, the product was not a commercial success.
U.S. Civil War National Cemetery letters
This collection consists of twenty-one letters from various U.S. Civil War military departments to other U.S. military departments, regarding various aspects relating to national cemeteries. These aspects include: the location, construction and inspection of national cemeteries, requests for materials and proposed costs, and reports of appointments and comments of national cemetery superintendents.
