Biographical / Historical
Houston in the mid-1850s to early 1900s had a very vibrant social and business culture, and early Houstonian families of pioneer stock were involved with many aspects of Houston's history. Surviving the Civil War and a devastated economy, Houston became a manufacturing and transportation center with four railroads radiating in each direction. The merchants and their families built the economy and enriched the social scene, ushering in a bustling and energetic city of today.
