James M. Reding letter

Abstract:

A letter written during the Civil War in December 1863 by James M. Reding, a Confederate soldier, to his sister concerning recent action near his army camp, including capture of a Union boat in Matagorda Bay, Texas, and the arrival of a Confederate boat loaded with arms; he also advises against his brother Bob’s enlistment in the army before reaching eighteen years of age.

Abstract:

The papers contain documents, photographs and printed material which document the career of James R. Sims, who taught civil engineering at Rice Institute (later Rice University) beginning in 1942 as an instructor, to becoming the Herman and George R. Brown Chair of Civil Engineering until his retirement in 1987. He then served as the Herman and George R. Brown Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering from 1987 until his death in 2009.

Abstract This scrapbook was created by James S. Waters’ wife Pauline Lackner Waters to document his time in service, both in training and on the battlefield. It includes memorabilia such as Waters’ Officer’s Record Book, Battle Insignia, Overseas Service Chevrons, documents recording his vaccination, and receipts from purchases made at the Ordnance Store. Many of the pages contain photos showing Waters’ training at Camp Bullis in Texas, his time abroad in France and Germany, and--rarely--his time on...

James Stephen Hogg letter transcriptions and family photographs

Abstract:

James Stephen Hogg letter transcriptions date from 1836-1906 and were copied from original manuscripts in the Texas State Library through the courtesy of the heirs of James S. Hogg. Family photographs date from circa 1890-1903 and include James S. Hogg, his parents, his wife Sallie Stinson, and various Hogg homes (including Varner-Hogg Plantation) and friends.

J.B. Harris notes on Green's Texas Brigade
