Memoranda to British Ship Captains from the Admiralty
Scope and Contents
This is a 38-page handwritten logbook containing dozens of general memos signed by proxy for various British Navy and Marine officers during the time period 1807-1809. Most of the entries were made on board a specific ship at a specific location. Some of the ships included in the writer's itinerary are the Zealand, the Agincourt, the Amethyst, the Clyde, the Iris, the Albicore and the Daphne.

Historical Sketch
This logbook was written during the Napoleonic Wars, 1799-1815, when Britain was at war with France. Britain was engaged in both land and naval warfare against France throughout this time period all over Europe. At the end of 1807, Napoleon took control of the Iberian Peninsula, sparking the Peninsular War, and Britain responded in the summer of 1808 to force the French army out of Portugal and eventually Spain by 1814.
