Biographical / Historical

The collection contains materials from Donna (Shultz) Weinberg and her late husband Herschell Weinberg. Donna’s father, Herman Shultz, was born in Germany. Herman Shultz’s father was a fabric merchant with a business route spanning from German to the Northeast United States. He moved his family to Boston, where Herman was raised. Donna’s mother was Nathalie Popperman, who’s parents moved to San Francisco and then to Houston. Donna’s parents Herman and Nathalie were married in October 1931 by Rabbi Schecter of Adath Yeshurun in Houston. They lived in Houston’s East End neighborhood and joined synagogue Emanu El when it was formed, around 1944.

Donna was born in 1937. Her family lived at 4606 Woodside, in the Eastwood neighborhood. Her family moved to Knollwood Village, a Jewish community located in Southwest Houston, around 1952. She was involved in Barnston BBG and was confirmed at Emanu El. Donna attended Stephen F. Austin High School and went on to study at Rice University. After undergrad, she taught 6th grade at Lantrip Elementary School, the same elementary school she had attended as a child.

Notably, Donna founded a private school in Houston named the Cliffwood School. The school’s mission was to serve underachieving yet bright children with an innovative curriculum and schedule. The school served around 100 students each year and was open for 30 years. Cliffwood School closed in 2007.

Herschell Weinberg, Donna’s late husband, was born in 1933. His father, Louie Weinberg was a long-term employee at Texaco. Louie Weinberg married Inez Burnell and the couple belonged to synagogue Beth Yeshurun in Houston. Herschell served in the United States Army in an infantry unit in West Germany and received a good conduct medal when he was discharged. Upon returning to the United States, he attended the University of Houston. After undergrad, he worked for 20 years as the manager of the Houston Chronicle Building Services Department, and retired in 1991. Herschell passed away at age 81 on Thursday July 30, 2015.
