Biographical / Historical
Dr. Stephen Addam Zeff has been an esteemed professor of accounting at Rice since 1978. Born in Chicago in 1933, Zeff earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Colorado in 1955 and 1957, and his MBA and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Michigan in 1960 and 1962. He then taught at Tulane University for 17 years, rising from assistant professor to the W.R. Irby Professor of Accounting, and working as a part-time lecturer at the School of Law from 1969 to 1977. For much of his tenure at Rice, from 1978 to 2013, Zeff was the Herbert S. Autrey Professor of Accounting, as well as a Professor of Managerial Studies from 1996 to 2004. From 2013 to 2017, in addition to being a Professor of Accounting, he held the Keith Anderson Professorship in Business. He was also Director of the Managerial Studies Program from 1980 to 1999. Since 2017, he has been the Keith Anderson Professor of Accounting. He has held a great deal of administrative roles at Rice, including serving on the University and Faculty Councils and as the Director of Undergraduate Accounting from 1984 to 2004. Dr. Zeff was co-chair of the Faculty Council's Task Force on Faculty and Shared Governance from 2004 to 2005, developing what came to be the Faculty Senate, and further served as Speaker of the Faculty Council from 1989-1990. He has also served as a visiting or adjunct professor at a dozen different institutions, including the University of Chicago and Harvard Business School.
Dr. Zeff has received honorary degrees from the Turku School of Economics and Business Administration in Finland, the University of Waterloo in Canada, and the Universidad de Alcalá in Spain. He has received several teaching and mentoring awards at both Tulane and Rice, including the George R. Brown Award for Superior Teaching on four occasions, and the equivalent award for the Jones Graduate School twice. He has received over thirty awards and distinctions from various academic and research organizations and foundations. He was inducted into the Accounting Hall of Fame in 2002. Dr. Zeff has also been a distinguished part of Rice campus life. He was an associate at Sid Richardson College from 1979 to 1987, and an executive associate and divisional adviser for the social sciences until 1996. He received the Outstanding Associate Award, established in 1986-87, each year until he left the role in 1995-96.
