Drake Mabry Papers
Scope and Contents
This digital collection contains selections of Drake Mabry's work, including scores and audiovisual performances of his music; images of his artwork and photography; text of his poetry; experimental and interview videos; as well as biographical documents including a CV and music catalog and additional files, including articles, programs, and other notes. Mabry's specialization in the Ney is seen in a 2011 (rev. 2020) guidebook for composing for the Turkish instrument, with accompanying audio examples. Among the audio materials are Mabry's "Wandering Ney" album cycle and his 2013 album with Maria Dorner-Hoffman as the ensemble TWO, combining contemporary and medieval pieces. Mabry's 2011 multimedia work Drakedonius, combining French and English poetry with painting and photography, is foremost among the contained poetic work.

Biographical / Historical
Drake Mabry is an American composer and multi-instrumentalist born on January 20, 1950, in Iowa City, Iowa. Mabry studied oboe performance at the Juilliard and Manhattan Schools of Music before studying composition in 1976 at Rice University, and later completing a PhD at the University of California, San Diego. He also studied under John Cage and Krzysztof Penderecki. His compositions, as well as his paintings, photography, and poetry, have been inspired by global artistic techniques, including Turkish Ebru and Chinese ink painting. His study of the Turkish Ney, under Burcu Karadag in Istanbul and Ismail Hakki in Kadıköy, has been particularly influential, as he has applied the instrument to a number of jazz and contemporary classical compositions. His ensemble TWO with Maria Dorner-Hoffman, founded in 2012, focuses on the intersection of the Ney with musical styles. Mabry has performed classical orchestra oboe as well as the saxophone, flute, and clarinet in jazz ensembles. He has taught at the University of Strasbourg, Rennes University, and the University of Poitiers, and was the head of a music school in Poitiers from 1999 to 2006. He belongs to the French Ministry of Culture's Commission of Experts.
