This symposium was hosted at Rice University on April 4, 2019, focused on capitalism and the convict leasing system in the American South. The lectures and panel discussion were given by activists and scholars who document and write on the continuing history and political and economic effects of the convict leasing system in America. It was organized by Dr. Caleb McDaniel and Dr. Lora Wildenthal, of the Department of History.
