The collection consists of photocopies of 49 letters to Morrison Gunn from members of his family and various friends. For the most part they are personal, but also include information on the conditions faced by immigrant farmers and the problems of establishing a home.

Biographical Note
Morrison Gunn was born in Edinburgh, Scotland circa 1820. He left Scotland for the United States as an adult somewhere between the late 1830s and the early 1840s and first lived in Laurens, Otsego County, New York. Subsequent addresses include Cold Water and Ann Arbor, Michigan and Angola, Indiana. He was employed by the American Car Company of Chicago. He was a private in the 129th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers from November 23, 1863, until his discharge on July 10, 1865 in Greensboro , North Carolina.
