28. U.S. Civil War

Four bound volumes of descriptive rolls recording the status (as of 1863) of soldiers serving in the following Missouri regiments in the Union Army during the United States Civil War: Missouri Infantry Volunteers, Missouri Cavalry Volunteers, Missouri Infantry and Cavalry Militia.

The U.S. Civil War Company records of the 6th Regiment Kentucky Infantry consist of General Orders; descriptive rolls of the regiments's commissioned and non-commissioned officers; a register of men discharged and why; a register of death; a register of deserters; and a descriptive roll of the regiment with physical and vital information.

The manuscript consists of four notebooks, written in the hand of Albert Sherrad Campbell at St. Louis, Missouri, covering the early months of the U.S. Civil War. Included are descriptions of battles and other political and military events.

J.B. Harris recounts the capture of his battalion of confederate cavalry outside of New Iberia, Louisiana in 1863. The format switches from verse to letter with many colloquialisms and an overall assumption that the reader is familiar with the subject and persons involved.

The Glass financial papers are primarily a collection of records and receipts of purchases and land sales gathered during the course of Glass' activities as receiver of revenue during the U.S. Civil War.

Five commissions recording the military promotions of Alexander N. Shipley from 2nd Lieutenant (1858) to Brevet Lieutenant Colonel (1866), and containing either authentic or stamped signatures of U. S. Presidents (James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson); also included is a smaller document relating to Shipley’s promotion to Brevet Lieutenant Colonel .

Charles B. Johnson Confederate Supply Requisition records pertain to the business of the Wichita Indian Agency as well as receipts, quartermasters’ store lists, payment abstracts, invoices, and records of acquisitions made by the Confederate States of America in the State of Texas.

The papers of Frank Everson Vandiver (1925-), former Professor of History, Acting-President, and Provost of Rice University consist chiefly of correspondence, manuscripts, and other material generated by Vandiver as a historian, writer, teacher, and lecturer at Rice University. Letters from Alexander MacDonald to his wife, Margaret MacDonald, including information concerning land disputes and importation of goods to Texas; letters from James MacDonald, serving with a Texas regiment during the Civil War, to his mother, Margaret MacDonald; letters of condolence to Margaret MacDonald after James's death during the war; letters from other family members; wills; maps; and documents.

The Hobbs diary records his experiences as a volunteer recruit in New England, his participation in the Battle of Galveston, and his life as a prisoner in Houston, 1862-1863.
