Abstract:

Legal documents and correspondence related to the Jose de Escandon expedition of the Gulf Coast (1765-1766) and the establishment of missions in the Seno Mexicano, and U.S. Civil War and Reconstruction documents, as well as other documents related to Texas and American history.

Abstract:

The Clarence R. Wharton Papers includes Wharton’s papers, correspondence, research files and manuscripts related to Texas history. The correspondence pertains primarily to the preparation and/or publication of his works, such as "Gail Borden, pioneer," "Wharton's History of Fort Bend County," "Remember Goliad," "L'Archeveque," and others. Also included is manuscript material of other authors.

A letter from Howard Hughes to William A. Kirkland, Board of Trustees, Rice Institute, Dec. 26, 1950, expressing his gratitute for a tribute to engineer Lewis Garfield published by Rice Institute.

Scope and Contents This collection consists of four letters from Colonel House to his niece Mary Louise Howze. The earliest of these, dated June 13, 1925 and penned in a Paris hotel, offers his congratulations to Mary Louise on the occasion of her graduation from Rice Institute. The second is postmarked Manchester, Massachusetts and thanks Mary Louise for her diligence in sending family news to him. Abstract: S. M. McAshan wrote this letter to T. W. House in Houston, Texas on July 18, 1864. The letter written during the Civil War concerns two items. Hutcheson papers include correspondence to and from Texas attorney and soldier Hutcheson before and during the U.S. Civil War, a text of a speech on immigration (1852), documents relating to the Masonic Order, a license to practice law in Texas, and several newspaper issues (1862, 1863, 1898, 1903) describing Hutcheson's life and his military career with the 4th Texas Regiment.
