11. Jewish community

The Colish / Samuels Family Papers follow the early days of Rabbi Robert Lewis Samuels through his attendance at Lanier Junior High and San Jacinto High School, his Confirmation, and participation in activities like the Aleph Zadik Aleph organization and sports teams for football and baseball.

This collection consists of correspondence, publicity materials, a statement about the founding of the Joan and Stanford Alexander South Texas Jewish Archives, formerly known as the Houston Jewish History Archive (HJHA), meeting materials, newsletters, and news clippings that feature the work the STJA is doing to preserve materials belonging to individuals and synagogues in the Houston Jewish community following the damage wrought by Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

The New York Deli and Coffee Shop collection preserves a glimpse of the titular influential local community nexus. The kosher bagel shop has been passed down through three generations of Kornhaber family and has made its mark on the local populace with its friendly atmosphere and commitment to community service.

The Westheimer/Simon family papers span several generations of the family living in Houston, and making their mark on the Houston Jewish community. With a variety of materials ranging from correspondence to photographs, sermons to yearbooks, the Westheimer/Simon family papers are a rich trove for any researcher interested in the history of one of Houston’s more influential families.

The collection consists of twenty four boxes containing correspondence, photographs, awards, news clippings, University of Houston Board of Regents records, contracts, financial documents and business records ranging from the 1920s to the 1980s.

This collection consists of one box containing correspondence, directories, conference/convention materials, newclippings, speeches and programs from Jay Ginsburg during his involvement in Aleph Zadik Aleph, spanning from 1958-1966.

This collection is made up of two boxes containing correspondence, media, event materials, directories, and memorabilia that document part of Rabbi Jimmy Kessler's life from 1943 to 2019.

This collection is made up of one box containing legal and financial documents of incorporation for the Adath Israel Congregation and miscellaneous materials from the Adath Israel Congregation, spanning from 1905-1966.

This collection is made up of one box containing photographs taken by Amalya Shandelman of the final service held by the United Orthodox Synagogues in February 2018, following the events of Hurricane Harvey in the fall of 2017.

The collection consists of four boxes containing family materials and synagogue/organization materials from Congregations Beth Israel, Emanu El and B'nail B'rith, including certificates, contracts, correspondence, school materials, reports, photographs, scrapbooks and memory books, and memorabilia spanning the years 1911 to 2015.
