Abstract

This manuscript collection contains a series of letters written from Commander Levin M. Powell of the USS John Adams to Commodore George W. Storer. Powell comments on the ships supplies and condition, his sailing orders, and the slave trade, while the ship was off the coast of Brazil, near Rio de Janeiro.

This collection contains documents and memorabilia donated by Libby and Edward Marvins related to their time as congregants at Emanu El as well as an oral history conducted with Libby Marvins by staff with the Houston Jewish History Archive in 2018. Letter written during the Civil War by an anonymous Union Army prisoner- of-war, dated December18, 1864, and addressed from Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia, to United States Senator William Wright of New Jersey, describing his worsening health while held in close confinement in the prison as hostage for a Confederate officer imprisoned in West Virginia, and urging the senator to intercede on his behalf to secure his exchange and release.
