Edward Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton, contract

Abstract

This collection contains an original contract in the Bulwer-Lytton’s own handwriting for the publication of his essays and criticisms for which he received $1250. Bulwer-Lytton was an English novelist, playwright, poet, and politician. Lord Lytton was a famous author who coined phrases such as “The pen is almightier than the sword” and “It was a dark and stormy night.”

Abstract

This collection contains a biographical sketch of Mirabeau Buonparte Lamar written by his secretary, Edward Fontaine. Lamar served as President of the Republic of Texas from 1838 until 1841. Originally opposed to U.S. annexation, he planned a comprehensive system of education; began successful negotiations for recognition by France, England, and Holland; and founded the city of Austin in 1840.
