Biographical / Historical
During its first academic year the Rice Institute did not have a library, but in the second year that began September 1913, temporary quarters for the Institute’s library were provided on the second floor of the Administration Building [Lovett Hall]. The "temporary" library space became inadequate as early as 1921 overflowing into two additional floors and expanding to several departmental libraries in other buildings. In 1949, the library moved out of the Administration Building when Fondren Library was completed.
