Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a handwritten manuscript (about 220 pages) by Edmund Clark Sanford. The manuscript contains Sanford’s thoughts on George Santayana’s book "The Sense of Beauty." Santayana was a professor at Harvard and a well-known philosopher; "The Sense of Beauty" was published in 1896. Sanford comments on each chapter of Santayana’s book, and he also includes some of his thoughts on aesthetics in general.

Biographical / Historical

Edmund Clark Sanford (1859 - 1924) was a prominent early American psychologist. He earned his PhD at Johns Hopkins University and then moved to Clark University in 1888, where he became a professor of psychology and the founding director of the psychology laboratory. He is best known for his 1887 Writings of Laura Bridgman and for his 1897 textbook, "A Course in Experimental Psychology." He was present at the creation of the American Psychological Association in 1892 and was the cousin of another early psychologist, Milicent Shinn.
