Stockton Axson papers

Abstract:

This collection contains the correspondence and other material of Dr. Stockton Axson, first head of the Rice English department and one of its most famous lecturers and teachers. Included are photographs, newspaper clippings, letters to family, telegrams, unpublished manuscripts, and a scrapbook.

The collection consists of approximately 235 poems, and correspondence relating to the poetry of Frank Elijah Dudley, of Beaumont, California. Also included in the collection are apparently American Indian artifacts including arrowheads, "swastika" gourd, animal sculptures and a small amount of California gold dust.

Sir Hall Caine papers

Abstract:

The collection primarily consists of letters addressed to Sir Hall Caine, a prominent British novelist and secretary to Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the poet and painter. Caine lived from May 14, 1853 until August 31, 1931. Caine greatly admired Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelite writings and much of the correspondence centers around the movement. Literary themes, especially related to events of the day, predominate the subjects of the letters.

This collection consists of an assortment of letters and papers acquired over a period of time and kept together. The collection consists of folders containing correspondence to and from historical / literary figures (Thomas Carlyle, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Jose de San Martin, George Bernard Shaw, Henry David Thoreau, William Wordsworth, and others). The largest part of the collection is correspondence of nineteenth century literary figures.
