Logs of the Ships HMS Topaze, HMS Achilles, HMS Duke of Wellington and HMS Agincourt
Scope and Contents
These three bound volumes contain the logs of four Royal Navy frigates; the HMS Topaze, the HMS Achilles, the HMS Duke of Wellington and the HMS Agincourt. The HMS Topaze was one of the ships in a detached squadron which served under the command of Rear Admiral George Granville Randolph. The first two volumes contain entries and maps drawn by Captain Arthur Thruppe regarding weather conditions, courses, chores performed, religious services on board the HMS Topaze from July 16, 1874 to August 19, 1877. The third volume contains similar notations, written by Capt. W.C. Carpenter onboard the HMS Duke of Wellington from May 23, 1877 to July 20, 1877; by Capt. Richard Wells onboard the HMS Agincourt from July 21, 1877 to August 1877; and by Sir William N. Hewett onboard the HMS Achilles from August 20, 1877 to October 16, 1878. The date range for all voyages is from July 16, 1874 to October 16, 1878.
Volumes are 8x12 inches, bindings are tight, pages foxed, endpapers are marbled.

Biographical Note
Arthur Thomas Thruppe lived from 1828 to 1889. He was a Royal Navy officer who served from 1852 to 1881, retiring as a Rear Admiral.
Richard Wells lived from 1833 to 1896; a Royal Navy officer who served from 1847 to 1896, attaining the rank of Admiral just two months before his death.
Sir William Nathan Wrighte Hewett lived from 1834 to 1888. He served in the Royal Navy from 1847 to 1884, retiring as a Vice Admiral in 1884.
Walter Cecil Carpenter lived from 1834 to 1904. He served in the Royal Navy from 1847 to 1894. He reached the rank of Admiral in 1894 shortly before he retired.
