Biographical / Historical
Davie Lou Solka is a former member of Congregation Beth El, now Beth Israel, of Corpus Christi. She led the Sisterhood and ran the synagogue store. She is also a past president and longtime member of the Texas Jewish Historical Society and has served as editor of the TJHS Magazine for 20 years.
Temple Beth El was founded in Corpus Christi in 1928. Construction began on their first building in 1930 and officially chartered with the State of Texas. On March 7, 1932 the congregation was "formally organized" as a Reform temple. The congregation hired their first rabbi, Rabbi Sidney Wolf, began before High Holidays of 1932. Rabbi Wolf remained rabbi of the congregation until he retired in 1972.
In 2005 Temple Beth El merged with Temple B'nai Israel, an Orthodox and then Conservative synagogue. They renamed their congregation to Beth Israel following the merger.
The Jewish Community Council of Corpus Christi was formed in 1952 as a joint project of both synagogues. They conduct youth and other programming and operate a pre-school.
