Biographical / Historical
The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is a grassroots organization dedicated to social justice, women’s rights, and improving the quality of life for women, children, and families. It was founded in 1893 in Chicago by Hannah Greenebaum Solomon and other Jewish women who sought to bring women’s voices into public service and reform efforts. Guided by Jewish values, NCJW became deeply involved in education, labor advocacy, child welfare, and immigrant protection. The Houston Chapter, founded in 1913 and led by its first president, Sadie Dannenbaum, reflected these priorities with a strong focus on guiding and protecting immigrants in the growing city. As part of a broader national restructuring, the Houston Chapter was officially closed in 2025, marking the end of more than a century of local service while the national organization continues its advocacy and social justice mission.
