Conditions Governing Use

Permission to publish from the Temperance and Prohibition collection must be obtained from the Woodson Research Center.

The Woodson Research Center use policy is that researchers assume sole responsibility for any infringement of privacy, literary rights, copyrights, or other rights arising from their use of the archival materials. In addition to any restrictions placed by donors, certain kinds of archival materials are restricted for the life of the creator plus 50 years. These materials include, but are not limited to, student grades, transcripts, and any job applications or recommendations.

Biographical / Historical

These broadsides and pamphlets mostly chart the rise of the temperance and prohibition movement in the United States. The majority of the pamphlets, published after the ratification of the Eighteenth Amendment, seek to rally continued support for the cause.

A large amount of these materials were published by the American Issue Publishing Company out of Westerville, OH. It was the publishing arm of the Anti-Saloon League of America.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Most of these materials entered the library in 1930. At a later point, they were cataloged as a group of prohibition pamphlets. In 2025, the Woodson decided these would be better described as an archival collection.
