Biographical / Historical

Rice University hired Associate Provost Roland Smith in 1996. For the next few years, he ran the Council of Diversity and Inclusion, as well as the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship [MMUF]. While MMUF had been in existence since before 1992, at that time it began to focus on how it could train people of color for jobs in academia.

In 2010, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion was created with Smith running it. He also oversaw the creation of the Multicultural Center which opened in 2020. Smith retired in 2021. Rice Universty renamed ODI to the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with Alexander Byrd, Vice Provost of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the helm.
