Permission to publish material from the Bernice Kaufman Papers must be obtained from the Woodson Research Center, Fondren Library. The Woodson Research Center use policy is that researchers assume sole responsibility for any infringement of privacy, literary rights, copyrights, or other rights arising from their use of archival materials. In addition to any restrictions placed by donors, certain kins of archival materials are restricted for the life of the creator plus 50 years. These materials include, but are not limited to, student grades, transcripts, and any job applications or recommendations.

Biographical / Historical

Bernice Kaufman's parents Polly Resnick and George Kaufman emigrated from Russia around 1908. Bernice was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1925 and she graduated from Boston University. Her husband, Paul Kaufman, was a colonel in the US Army. The family moved around a lot, living at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, from 1958 to 1963 and Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas, from 1968 to 1971. When Paul retired from the military in 1973, the Kaufman family moved to Houston to be better situated for his job as a hospital administrator at Hermann Hospital. Bernice has four children, Lisa Griffith, Carol Kaufman, Mark Kaufman and Sandy Bennet. When her children moved out of their Houston home, Bernice worked in the insurance industry until she retired.
