Biographical / Historical
Gerald Moorhead was born in 1947 in Iowa to a military family, double-majored in architecture and art history at Rice University (1969, 1971) and was commissioned a reserve army lieutenant via ROTC in 1969. Before and after graduation he worked in architects’ offices and then independently in Houston, specializing in historic preservation projects, books and articles, and award-winning photographs in numerous exhibits and publications. His books include the two-volume Buildings of Texas and key contributions to the Houston Architectural Guide. In 1991 he was elevated to Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. He also worked on several international projects and, among many other honors, was named Architect Laureate of Kazakhstan in 1992. A substantial collection of his research materials and photographs is included in the Alexander Architectural Archives, University of Texas at Austin.
