Biographical / Historical

After appointment of a committee to conduct a presidential search following the resignation of George Rupp, the process began with a two-day meeting of the committee off-campus December 4-6, 1992. Committee members made visits to academic leaders identified as resources for names of potential candidates. Information was gathered about 120 individuals.

At the time of the search Malcolm Gillis was Dean of Arts and Sciences at Duke University. He had been considered an internal candidate for the presidency of Duke, but it was decided that this university’s new president should come from outside. Various members of the committee met with Dr. Gillis, he was interviewed In Houston, and he emerged as the committee’s top choice.
