The college is named for Harry Clay Hanszen, a wealthy Texas oilman, who served as chairman of Rice's Board of Governors from 1946 to 1950. Brown College was dedicated on October 3, 1965 and was filled primarily by women who had volunteered to leave Jones College, then the only women's college, to start a new college.
