Abstract These records consist of the academic and Rice University-related work, correspondence, course materials, publications, and student work of Kathleen S. Matthews.

Overview The Pallas Athene Literary Society (PALS) was formed in 1919 when the Elizabeth Baldwin Literary Society (EBLS) split and was an active organization at Rice until 1966 when it disbanded. The records consist of a ledger book containing minutes of the society’s meetings (September 23, 1924 – May 14, 1929), newspaper clippings pertaining to various members and alumnae, and several programs and pamphlets of the society’s activities.

Overview The collection consists of both published and unpublished records of projects undertaken by the Rice Center for Community Design + Research, subsequently the Rice Center. It also includes records of two projects of the University of Louisville which served as precursors to much of the early research completed at the Rice Center.

Overview This collection contains records of the first computer developed at Rice University (then Rice Institute) including correspondence, memoranda, manuals, news clippings, photographs, and drawings.

Overview The collection includes scripts from the 1920s as well as programs, ephemera, and photographs. In addition there are newsclippings and a ledger beginning in 1931 and continuing through 1934 containing lists of members, committee assignments, and minutes of meetings.

Overview In response to the Rice Institute's invitation to its formal opening in 1912, a number of institutions worldwide responded favorably, delegating representatives and sending good wishes and encouragement to the new institution. In addition, this collection contains a number of later invitations from other colleges and universities to attend similar anniversaries, and the Rice Institute's responses thereto. (1 box)

Abstract This collection contains working drafts, business correspondence and receipts, and related material from "Rice University Studies," a university publication of scholarly works.

Overview The collection consists of 284 8” by 10” black and white photographs of special occasions at Rice Institute, chiefly baccalaureate and commencement ceremonies. The photographs were collected by Captain James A. Baker and were presented in May 1960 to the Rice Institute Library in memory of Captain and Mrs. Baker by the Baker family.

Overview These records reflect the court proceedings of and alumni and public response to Rice Institute's Charter trial of 1964 and later appeals and judgments. The lawsuit was brought by the Rice Institute Trustees seeking to alter the Institute's original charter to allow admission of students of color and to enable the school to charge tuition.
