Biographical / Historical

Kathleen Matthews earned her B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Texas, 1966, and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1970. She joined the Rice faculty in 1972 just as the Deptartment of Biochemistry was established. She served as Department Chair in 1987. She became Dean of the Wiess School of Natural Sciences in 1998. Under her leadership as dean, the school made advances in many areas, such as recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty and achieving many exciting discoveries in research. She retired from the dean's office in 2008, and was honored in 2010 by BioHouston for her efforts as a researcher, educator and mentor. She continues to teach at Rice University, as the Stewart Memorial Professor of Biochemistry and Cell Biology.
