Personal letters between Aldous Huxley, Maria Huxley, Eva Hermann and Martha Saxton. Letters largely refer to personal topics including the death of Martha Saxton's husband, Gene. Aldous Huxley was the brother of renowned biologist and former Rice Institute faculty member Julian Huxley.

Allan Cunningham papers

Abstract:

The bulk of this collection is comprised of correspondence to and from art historian Allan Cunningham. The correspondence largley concerns matters connected with Cunningham's numerous publishing projects, including his Lives of the Most Eminent British Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, which appeared between 1829 and 1833. Also included in the collection are three Mss. poems--one perhaps by the Rev. J. Judkins and two by Cunningham.

Annie Gregory letter

Abstract

This collection contains a letter from Annie Gregory to Lady Margaret Spicer, daughter of the 12th Earl of Westmoreland. In the note, Annie requests that Lady Spicer let her know if her husband Captain John Edward Philip Spicer would “let” her (Annie) a cottage called Chittoe Heath. Annie Gregory belonged to a Methodist (Wesleyan) family in Wiltshire.

General Garnet Joseph Wolseley Letter

A letter written from Cairo by British General Garnet Joseph Wolseley to the publisher MacMillan, primarily attacking Prime Minister William E. Gladstone for his vacillation which resulted in failure to reach General Charles G. Gordon and Egyptian forces at Khartoum in time to save them from destruction by Sudanese rebels attacking the city, and also discussing Wolseley’s plan to produce a fifth edition of the Soldiers’ Pocket Book.

The account book includes individual wages for officers and crews; allowances for victuals; prices of provisions to be paid to and by the Purser; various allowances and expense lists; lists of French, Dutch and Algiers fleets, including ship names and guns; as well as lists of the major Royal Navy commands, the red, white, and blue squadrons, with ships assigned to each, their commanders, guns, and names of flag officers commanding.
