Historical Note
For its formal opening in 1912, the Rice Institute invited a number of American and foreign institutes of learning to send representatives to join in the academic celebration commemorating the occasion. Invitations such as these were sent out to delegates from the world's universities to invite them to celebrate the opening of Rice Institute and to make a statement about the kind of place Rice was to be. The invitations were signed by Rice Institute's President Lovett personally, included a full program of the three days of celebratory events and lectures, and were mailed in a handmade wooden tube especially created for this purpose. Read the lectures in the three volume set online, "The Book of the Opening," at https://scholarship.rice.edu/handle/1911/35962.
