28. U.S. Civil War

The Glass financial papers are primarily a collection of records and receipts of purchases and land sales gathered during the course of Glass' activities as receiver of revenue during the U.S. Civil War.

Five commissions recording the military promotions of Alexander N. Shipley from 2nd Lieutenant (1858) to Brevet Lieutenant Colonel (1866), and containing either authentic or stamped signatures of U. S. Presidents (James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson); also included is a smaller document relating to Shipley’s promotion to Brevet Lieutenant Colonel .

Charles B. Johnson Confederate Supply Requisition records pertain to the business of the Wichita Indian Agency as well as receipts, quartermasters’ store lists, payment abstracts, invoices, and records of acquisitions made by the Confederate States of America in the State of Texas.

The papers of Frank Everson Vandiver (1925-), former Professor of History, Acting-President, and Provost of Rice University consist chiefly of correspondence, manuscripts, and other material generated by Vandiver as a historian, writer, teacher, and lecturer at Rice University. Letters from Alexander MacDonald to his wife, Margaret MacDonald, including information concerning land disputes and importation of goods to Texas; letters from James MacDonald, serving with a Texas regiment during the Civil War, to his mother, Margaret MacDonald; letters of condolence to Margaret MacDonald after James's death during the war; letters from other family members; wills; maps; and documents.

The Hobbs diary records his experiences as a volunteer recruit in New England, his participation in the Battle of Galveston, and his life as a prisoner in Houston, 1862-1863.

Nicholas Bryar Massenburg, planter of Franklin County, N.C., owned Woodleaf and Egypt plantations. In this daybook, Massenburg describes weather conditions, social activities, and sales of land and equipment. Yearly lists of slaves, their ages and overseers are also included.

A collection of letters written by Charles Roberts to his family during his years of service in the Union Army of the U.S. Civil War. The letters cover a wide range of emotions and activities, including his regiment’s movements, his career in the army, and his personal opinions regarding the war.

The collection consists of a revised manuscript of The Case of the South Against the Encyclopaedia Britannica and other Maligners and contains approximately 140 loose sheets of various sizes, consisting of printed material pasted on with handwritten notations and revisions.

Official documents, books, advertisements, religious pamphlets, maps, and various other materials related to life in the Confederacy during the period of the U.S. Civil War.
