Abstract:

Over one half of the collection documents cattle ranching, oil prospecting, and banking in Texas, as well as personal and family life during the Great Depression. The William Allen Haynes collection offers a view of living conditions of a prosperous Central Texas rancher and entrepreneur as well as providing information on conditions in Texas in the first part of the 19th century.

The Max Nicholson/Julian Huxley papers consist of correspondence, documents, typescripts, articles, and off-prints (c. 1927-1980s) relating to Nicholson's collaboration with his contemporaries (including Julian Huxley) on projects such as the Idea Systems Group and publication of The Humanist Frame.

Correspondence between biologist Julian Huxley to art historian Kenneth Clark, including some letters between their wives Juliette Huxley and Jane Clark, regarding art, artists, financing films of animals, Clark’s television series, both Clark’s and Huxley’s books, the Zoological Society of London, British Candidates for the Nobel Prize, WWII government projects, and personal matters. Russell Wait, Director of the Port of Houston from 1930-1947, offering a comprehensive history of the Port of Houston's construction, facilities, finances, clients and operations from 1931-1962. During this time, the Port of Houston grew from the nation's twelfth largest port to its third largest. Materials also relate to the Brazos River Harbor Navigation District, Houston Ship Channel maps, and scrapbooks on WWII and Japan.

The bulk of this material consists of business records of the Brown & Root firm and Brown Shipbuilding Co., relating in particular to building projects and joint ventures with other companies such as Zapata Offshore, Texas Gulf Sulphur and ARMCO Steel, as well as internal operations of the firm.
