Abstract:

This collection of speeches, correspondences, reports, and photographs documents the work of Albert Thomas, U.S. Representative for Harris County, Texas, from 1936-1966. Albert Thomas was the first Rice Alumnus to serve in Congress. He graduated from Rice Institute in 1920.

This collection contains a compilation of letters to and from Colonel House regarding business deals, financial holdings, and politics. The majority of the letters are addressed to Thomas C. Dunn. Other correspondents include: Dewitt C. Dunn, Secretary McAdoo of the Treasury Department, and Paul M. Warburg. Topics discussed include real estate, federal and regional reserve banks.

This collection contains two typed letters from Lester Maddox, then-owner of The Pickrick, to Mr. J. Miller thanking him for his support in matters not clearly stated but related to civil rights. Both letters were written in 1964.

The papers of Frankie Carter Randolph (1894-1972), longtime leader of Texas liberal Democrats, include correspondence, documents, newsclippings, photographs, oral history interviews and other materials that chronicle her political activism in Texas during the 1950s and 1960s. Issues include the Poll Tax, labor law, African Americans, and social programs.

Abstract The Judge Peter W. Gray papers include extensive handwritten documents on several of Gray’s early Texas district court cases, lectures, speeches, and official documents concerning the creation and organization of the Texas Historical Society.
