Jōdo Sanbu Myōten [Three Pure Land Scriptures] (small scroll)
Scope and Contents
Jōdo Sanbu Myōten [Three Pure Land Scriptures] [Hashimoto, Taemon (edited by)]. [Kyōto]: Hashimoto Taemon, [ca. late Tenpō to Bunkyū period (1840-60s)?]. A miniature copperplate-printed scroll published in the Edo period and measuring over 4.8 metres in length. The scroll contains the "Three Pure Land Scriptures" of the Jōdo-kyō (Pure Land) Buddhist sect — the Amitāyus Sutra, the Amitāyus Contemplation Sūtra, and the Amitābha Sūtra. These sutras have been printed in tiny characters on almost impossibly thin paper used for the scroll by the publisher, Hashimoto Taemon, who is better known as (Hashimoto) Hōfūdō. An accompanying box for the scroll has been constructed by an exowner. One paper scroll, complete. Original wrappers worn and creased, with a few tears. Original woodblock-printed daisen title slip present. Small section of original binding tie present. Creases and occasional rubbing to text. Metal scroll roller. Housed in non-original box. Approximately 5.5 x 484 cm when fully unfurled. [Dealer description: Hozuki Books]
