Scope and Contents
穎才新誌社. [Eisai Shinshisha]. 東京. [Tokyo]. 5th edition Meiji 30 [ 1897] Black and white illustration on upper cover, 19 x12.6cm, 136pp, even browning throughout, original wrappers trifle soiled and chipped but generally good. This distinctive book offers an analysis of magic and hypnosis as psychological phenomena, rather than serving as a practical guide. In the foreword, the author, writing under a pseudonym, asserts that there is no mystery in magic and hypnosis, and proceeds to explain their principles throughout the text. Notably, the appendix includes Christian missionaries among those who practise magic. The front cover illustration depicts a scene of a magic show being demonstrated before a group of puzzled men and women.
