General
Rice belt buckle, silver-toned, belonging to Joseph W. ("Buck") Friedman, class of 1937. Buckle is rectangular, with raised border, word "Rice" and superimposed Athenian Owl, on textured background. The back is stamped with a maker's mark "J.J. Sweeney JLV. Co". This item is accompanied by a tag that states the owner as "J.W. "Buck" Friedman, captain 1st Rice SWC Football champ (1930's). Research into Campanile's while writing this note indicates a different story: The first SWC football championship for Rice was in 1934 when Friedman was a sophomore on the team (not captain) and the next was in 1937 when Friedman had already graduated. The 1937 Campanile (which covered the Fall '36 football season) shows Friedman as a senior and co-captain of the team, but Rice did not win the championship that year. Item is accompanied by a tag stating that it was donated by Friedman's nephew, Jim Banfz (sp.?) in March 1996. Item is located within an envelope identified with "Rice Belt Buckle belonging to Joseph W. ("Buck") Friedman, class of 1937."
