General

Watch fob with black ribbon and sterling silver Owl medallion. Medallion has letter "R" on front, with letters "CAPT" engraved below. Two chevrons dangle from from the medallion. There are two charms dangling from the chevrons, one with what appears to be a football, and one with what appears to be a baseball. There is no information found regarding the donor. The style of the item, and it's purpose as a pocket watch fob, place it somewhere around ca. 1920. The box in which this item is found has the pencilled name "Potts" on the top and "Jas E. Potts" pencilled on the back with other details. From research in the Rice Campanile's, there was, in fact, a James Putnam Potts who was a freshman in 1917, then apparently went into service during World War I, and returned as a freshman in 1920. In the 1920 Campanile, he appears as being, again, in the Freshman class. His name appears in subsequent Campanile's through 1925 related to the football and baseball teams, and the "R" club, but never appears again as being within any class. Item is located in a rectangular "J.J. Sweeney Jewelry Co." box, with "Potts" written on the top and additional details on the bottom.
