Series II: Commissions, 1865-66
Scope and Contents
The Alexander N. Shipley Military Commissions consist of five oversized (c. 16” x 19”) parchment documents under the decorative title ‘The President of the United States of America’ and bearing official wax seals. Each is dated and signed by or stamped with the signature of the incumbent President (James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln, or Andrew Johnson), followed by that of the incumbent Secretary of War. Also included is one 8” x 10” document imprinted on a sheet of folded 10” x 16” paper, relating to Shipley’s promotion to Brevet Lieutenant Colonel.
