General
This item was previously identified with the date 1916, but there is no evidence that this is accurate or even close. The two bookends are closely similar but not identical. They differ in detail, color and finish with one bookend clearly heavier than the other. They are likely not carved from the same wood species. There are two cards in the box with the following text: "Presented November 8, 1966 by Edith Leesemann Dissinger, Rice '16. These "owl" bookends were carved by Mr. Grafton Waples and were given to Mrs. Dissinger by Margaret Waples, Rice '16."
