The papers include investigative reports, correspondence, and ship and crew information in relation to the grounding of the S.S. Schroon while helping the S.S. West Hematite. Of particular note is the typescript of the hearing in New Orleans between representatives of the National Organization of Masters, Mates and Pilots of America and representatives of steamship companies to determine "a definition of what constitutes an arrival, departure, sailing or shifting of ship."
