Subseries I: Index to Biographical Sketches published in Volumes 1-14

The sketch index includes major family properties described in the edition. Occasionally, the published sketches are updated with later information–see marginalia in office copy of the edition. This index is useful for convenience, whether in electronic or printed format. It indicates family members, identifies people with the same or very similar names (James Brown, William Black, Albert Sidney Johnston, George W. Jones, Mary Custis Lee are examples), individuals with aliases or who changed their names, nicknames and names by which they were known, which was often the middle name. Some persons have two biographical sketches.
