Series I: Notebook, 1794
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of a bound manuscript notebook (4x7 inches) kept by Lieutenant John Anderson of the 11th Light Dragoons in the British Army and Allied Effort, who was stationed in Tournai, France. The notebook’s entries date from May 9, 1794 through June 6, 1794 and include daily details, promotions, rules and orders regarding medical matters, church services, and the guarding of prisoners. The notebook also includes schedules for receiving bread and forage, copies of signed orders, statements from the Commander-in-Chief regarding battles, the enemy, and women following the army. The entry for June 5th describes the court martial of various persons, the court’s indication of guilt or innocence, and the punishments given.
