Abstract

Letters, diaries, scrapbooks, and notebooks belonging to various members of the Elliott family, dating from 1830-1951. The majority of the collection's letters are from the early 20th-century, though some date from the U.S. Civil War (describing life in Mississippi). Other materials describe farm life in Kansas, railroad business, attendance at Rice Institute, and the family life of the Elliotts.

Hanszen College is one of the four original colleges, which were established to house students. The college is named for Harry Clay Hanszen, a wealthy Texas oilman, who served as chairman of Rice's Board of Governors from 1946 to 1950. Formats include Cabinet meeting minutes, correspondence, news clippings, publications, handbooks, videos, brochures and theatrical events programs.

Brown College was dedicated on October 3, 1965 and was filled primarily by women who had volunteered to leave Jones College, then the only women's college, to start a new college.
