Scope and Contents

This collection consists of course preparation materials for various German subjects Freund taught at Rice, such as Philology, Phonetics, and Literature. Much of the material is in German and came unidentified as to content. It has been rough sorted but left in the order it was received. The second part of the collection is from the Rice German Honor Society -- Delta Phi Alpha. These papers include correspondence, membership information, financial records, minutes, governmental material and other items relating to the Society.

Biographical Sketch

Dr (Friedrich Ernst) Max Freund was born at Hainichen in the former kingdom of Saxony on February 27, 1879. He received his education and training in Leipzig. In 1903 he was appointed to the chair of the modern languages at Queen's College at Belfast. When World War I began in the summer of 1914 he was assigned to military service in Germany and stationed in the Eastern front. He was professor of modern English at the universities of Geissen and Marburg in Germany from 1915-1925. In 1925 he accepted the position of Professor of German and Head of the German department at Rice. Together with his wife, Anna Regina Keck Freund, he founded the Goethe-Vereien and was active in the German-American Societies of Houston. He became a naturalized American citizen in 1933. He retired in 1947 and in his retirement he completed his translation and critical edition of Gustav Dresel's Houston Journal, and had conferred on him the Officer's Cross First Class of the Order of Merit by the Federal Republic of Germany. Dr. Freund died aged 101 on June 16, 1980.
