Biographical Note

Herbert Allen, an inventor and mechanical engineer, was born May 2, 1907 in Ratcliff, Texas. He graduated from Rice University in 1929 where he later served on the Board of Governors and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. After graduation he joined Cameron Iron Works. During his 60 years with Cameron he rose from Project Engineer to General Manager, President, and Chairman of the Board. A prolific inventor, he held over 300 patents, most of which were related to the petroleum industry. He is also remembered as the inventor of the “Screwpull,” an easier way to uncork a bottle of wine. Herbert Allen died in Houston on June 12, 1990.
