Correspondence, oral histories, notes, newsclippings, reports, published materials, photographs and ephemera in this collection document the family and business lives of Houston entrepreneurs Herman and George R. Brown, providing the basis for author Christopher Castaneda and Joseph Pratt's book, Builders : Herman and George R. Brown

The bulk of this material consists of business records of the Brown & Root firm and Brown Shipbuilding Co., relating in particular to building projects and joint ventures with other companies such as Zapata Offshore, Texas Gulf Sulphur and ARMCO Steel, as well as internal operations of the firm. Formats include correspondence, internal memos, project site drawings, photographs, reports, notes, and newsclippings.

The collection consists of correspondence, photographs, personal records, genealogy books, memorabilia, audio and visual materials, and ephemera collected by Nancy Cravens Chamberlain and representing the lives of her grandfather, Joseph Stephen Cullinan; her parents, Mary Cullinan and James R. Cravens; and herself and her siblings.

Original letters, pamphlets, tabloids, printed materials, books, videos, maps, and photographs documenting the Texas city of Sugar Land during the 19th century and 20th century, including the creation and development of the Imperial Sugar company.

Correspondence, contracts, credit reports, and leases in this collection document the business of Houston, Texas based Merchants & Planters Oil Company, particularly during the last period of its existence, 1930 through 1941. This company was owned by William Marsh Rice and associated with Rice Institute after Mr. Rice's death.

Original personal material and photocopied professional materials relating to economist and foreign policy expert Will Clayton and family, dating from 1897-1998. In addition to serving the U.S. government in a number of capacities, Clayton was in cotton business, and a co-founder of Anderson, Clayton and Company, based in Houston, Texas.

Correspondence, reports, research notes, and photographs created and/or maintained by Mr. Reginald Moore, relating to the history of the Convict Leasing System in Sugar Land, Texas and current efforts to publicly recognize that history.

The Max Nicholson/Julian Huxley papers consist of correspondence, documents, typescripts, articles, and off-prints (c. 1927-1980s) relating to Nicholson's collaboration with his contemporaries (including Julian Huxley) on projects such as the Idea Systems Group and publication of The Humanist Frame.
