Scope and Contents

The collection includes the archive from Paul Harcombe and Sandi Elsik’s ecological research in the Big Thicket National Preserve; academic and university affairs regarding Rice University and the Ecology and Environmental Biology Department, as well as student and faculty records; Paul Harcombe’s personal documents, including his correspondence and his personal notebooks; publications, including articles from the journals of Ecology and Ecological Monographs, the Ecological Society of America and the Journal of Vegetative Science, as well as articles from the Tall Timbers Conference and numerous Texas County Soil Surveys; Paul Harcombe’s class and lecture materials; projects and proposals in which Paul Harcombe was involved; and two rolls of film containing aerial views of the Houston area. The seventh series, Aerial Film Rolls, consists of two 10-inch spindles of film showing aerial views of the Houston area. The Big Thicket Archive contains documentation on the project as well as equipment used, including Sandi Elsik’s field clipboard.

Biographical Note

Paul Harcombe received his PhD from Yale University and served as a faculty member at Rice University from 1972 until 2007, when he retired. He was a forest ecologist, specializing in forest communities of the southeastern United States. Sandi Elsik served as Data and Research Manager in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department of Rice University until her retirement in 2007. She worked extensively with Paul Harcombe on the Big Thicket project (BITH).

Acquisition Information

The Paul Harcombe and Sandi Elsik Big Thicket Archive (1 linear foot) was received 7-12-07. The remainder of the Paul Harcombe Papers (18 linear feet) was delivered by Warren Preuss on 7-25-07. Sparsely written day planners and calendars were discarded.
